Howard Caldwell
From producing his own neighborhood newspaper to his interview with Madame Gandhi to segments on WFBM/WRTV such as “Howard’s Indiana,” Howard Caldwell’s career in broadcast journalism was nothing short of legendary.
GROWING UP
Howard Caldwell was born July 18, 1925 in Irvington, Indiana, to Howard C. Caldwell, Sr., and Elsie Rebecca. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, he loved reading, writing and orating from an early age. Copies still survive of his weekly neighborhood newspaper – "The Weekly News" — produced with just a rubber stamp and an ink pad, sold for half a cent per issue. When it became too difficult to individually produce and stamp each issue, the young Caldwell took his passion to his high school newspaper.

Although Caldwell’s interest in print writing took root first, he found his passion for broadcast not long after. It was somewhat of a family affair — his father was an advertising executive and had collaborated with Weir Cook — an Indiana native and World War I combat ace — to produce a radio show for young listeners about airplanes. Caldwell’s father also took him to Cincinnati, Ohio, to watch the taping of a radio show.
"When I was a kid, I was a big radio listener," Caldwell said. "I was fascinated by the idea of radio. I was fascinated by the idea of working for a newspaper someday or maybe being in the broadcast business."
Caldwell Sr. played a significant role in his life by acting as an inspiration to pursue media. Working at an ad agency, Caldwell Sr. didn’t have much time to spend at home with his family; he was often the first to arrive and the last to leave work, even working additional hours on the weekends. However, the younger Caldwell noted his father’s hard work and dedication to the craft, commending his knack for building relationships as a marketing tool. Caldwell had one sister, Virginia, and three step-siblings, Ann Marcrum, Tom Lugar, and former United States Senator Richard Lugar.
EDUCATION
Caldwell graduated from Howe High School in 1944. Upon graduation, he entered the Navy and spent a year as a radio operator aboard a South Pacific minesweeper during World War II.
After being released from the service, he began his education. It took Caldwell a while to find the right fit, bouncing around schools for a while. He first attended Indiana University, where he majored in print journalism. The environment, he quickly discovered, did not seem right for him. He was unsuccessful in forming close connections socially, and the student body — only one-third of today’s total enrollment — felt too big.
Feeling lost and desiring something more, he went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for the summer of 1947. Northwestern introduced him to his first and only broadcast courses, but once again, Caldwell didn’t feel he fit in with the social scene of broadcasting there.
After that summer, Caldwell returned to IU to continue pursuing journalism. Yet again dissatisfied, Caldwell decided to transfer during the middle of his sophomore year and finally found what he was looking for at Butler University. Butler interested Caldwell for many reasons. He expressed excitement at the prospect of being taught by the well-known, highly-respected Butler faculty. Notably however, were his family’s ties to the institution: both of his parents and his sister, Virginia, were Butler alumni.
CAREER
Caldwell bounced around between the military, various jobs and colleges for a few years to find the right fit. His journey landed him first in Hagerstown, Indiana, where he worked at the weekly paper, the Exponent. After one year on the job, Howard was recalled to service during the Korean conflict and served at the Great Lakes Naval Base, north of Chicago, as editor of a newsletter. Caldwell considered The Exponent a good first job, but he did not return to the small town paper because was looking for a broadcasting job in a larger market.
Next, he was hired at WTHI in Terre Haute. Although Caldwell was initially hired as a reporter, he would later make the jump to broadcasting. When Caldwell first started in television broadcasting at WTHI, cameras with audio and visual recording abilities were not used. The two elements were recorded separately and then edited together, a major difference from the technologies used at the end of his career. Caldwell would go on to spend four years as news manager at WTHI before taking a job that would end up defining his career.
"I guess the one [change in broadcasting that's the most startling to me, and affected me the most, is the growth of the news," Caldwell said.
But his longest and perhaps most significant role began in 1959 when he was hired as the news editor at WFBM (now WRTV) by general manager Eldon Campbell in May 1959. This was the true start of a 35-year-long broadcasting career that saw him reporting across Indiana and even to the Far East. Much of Caldwell’s time at WFBM was spent producing newscasts that he anchored for early- and late-evening news shows. He also anchored two regular segments, one of which was called “Howard’s Perspective” and the other “Howard’s Indiana.”
“Howard’s Perspective,” offered commentaries about news happenings around the city and state. This segment saw him covering topics such as the Indianapolis 500, the end of World War II, local mayoral races and his relationship with Richard Lugar. Caldwell brought a calm, reassuring style to these broadcasts, providing viewers with a trusted face to give his two cents about the news.
Caldwell also anchored “Howard’s Indiana.” The series was a collection of short stories and interviews on local topics. Caldwell covered movie theater attendance following the popularization of home TV sets, the complex architecture of the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis, and the re-opening of a historic grist mill in Mansfield. These stories cover a range of lighter topics that featured some level of uniqueness or historical importance that made them compelling. The show centered on average Hoosiers with unique passions and stories, creating a kind of patchwork of reporting that functioned to exemplify Indiana through its people.
During his career, Caldwell also seized opportunities such as being the first American journalist to interview Madame Gandhi.
"I'd like to think that television's absorption into news and public affairs has enhanced the mind of the typical American," Caldwell said. "If you want to make the most of it, you can."
OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Caldwell was honored with a multitude of accolades throughout his career — in 1978, the Indianapolis Press Club named him the first Newsman of the Year; Butler University gave him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1984, and he was named the Gold Circle Award winner by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2011.
Caldwell’s career wasn’t limited to television and broadcasting. Throughout his lifetime, he authored two books: Tony Hinkle, Coach for All Seasons and The Golden Age of Indianapolis Theatres. He also wrote the text for Indianapolis, a book of photography by Darryl Jones. Caldwell was married to his wife, Lynn, for 62 years, throughout which time they shared three children.
He was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1991 and retired in 1994. He continued to contribute for a couple more years with occasional reports, such as perspectives and one-on-one interviews. Caldwell passed away Sept. 11, 2017, leaving behind a lasting legacy of community reporting in which he bore witness to the heart and personality of Indiana.
