Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame Banquet; Howard Caldwell's last news broadcast before his retirement; Howard Caldwell's Retirement Special: 35 years of making a difference

Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame Banquet and Last Broadcast

This was overall a compilation of what Channel 6 as well as what other people and stations did to pitch in to thank Caldwell when he was retiring. It includes a look back on his career, retirement plans and messages from multiple people in the industry and friends. 

00:00: introduction of a few people sitting at a table 

**00:32: a man, likely a Channel 6 colleague, starts to talk about Caldwell’s background, focusing on when his start and first publication, garnering a few laughs, he gives a lot of information about Caldwell’s education, first jobs, names of publications, etc. He talks about his time as an anchor, biggest accomplishments 

00:32:” We see so often” 

5:12: “Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame” 

This is helpful to put together Caldwell’s history as a reporter. A lot of publications, people and awards are named to follow up on. This would be extremely helpful to build his timeline and biography. 

*5:39: Caldwell addresses the banquet, he talks about his work and past memories, he was supposed to write stories among other tasks, talks about his first job, time at Butler 

5:39: “Give a tv news anchor” 

9:49: “Come over here” 

This is great to include as a audiobiography because it’s Caldwell talking about himself with great clarity. He notes a lot of names and talks about his experiences over his academic and professional career. 

13:25: WRTV6 news starts, seems to be full newscast, starts with breaking news about a man who was shot, weather, child custody case, another shooting 

22:38: Other anchor says it is Caldwell’s last newscast and they will go over his history with the channel, community members are shown and thank him for his time 

23:45: back to news about traffic, invention convention 

29:00: more community feedback 

29:50: back to news, weather 

35:04: talks about how ABC news president is a huge fan of Caldwell’s, Roone Arledge gives talks about how great of a reporter Caldwell is 

36:44: goes back to talk about sports and the Pacers, world news “world wrap”, a women who had sextuplets  

40:00: community feedback, said they want to see him at IU football games, back to weather 

45:56: they look back on the past three decades of television, highlights the Indy 500 and how people first started watching tv, going through the history of the channel and diff newscasters, a kids show in 1961 

51:20: Caldwell said he would be back doing a few things, they talk about what he will miss in his retirement, “end of an era”, those on the show talk about how much they will miss him and thank him, he gets a round of applause, he thanks everyone, staff all walks onto the set to shake his hand and give applause 

53:22: a slideshow of old pictures plays 

53:30: another newscast plays, caldwell is back in a goodbye special 

55:40: jumps into Caldwell’s background and his beginnings, has clips of Caldwell talking about his time at the smaller publications 

59:30: talks about his move to television and time at channel 6, he was on the ground reporting for a gas explosion killing 78 people 

1:01: talks about his trip to India, plays a clip of the interview, wfbm became only hour long show, caldwell promoted, changed to WRTV, talks about his trips and interviews, went to the white house and asked reagan a question, people talk about his legacy 

1:04:53: Caldwell talks about how he talked to Gandhi, said he wore them down to get the interview, oprah and good morning america send a message 

1:04:50: “something that was much more sophisticated” 

1:05:25: “We werent screened on our questions or anything” 

This is more on his trip to India 

1:08:12 starts talking about his family, talks about family home, childhood best friends, worked on high school newspaper, they talk about how they deal with his popularity 

1:15:45: talk about his routine and quiet time during retirement, continuing his log 

1:17:40: Reggis Philman and show says thank you, Bob Knight also and says to come down and see the team 

1:18:10: talking about his interviews and people who worked with him, more people talk about him, caldwell became the producer, tim allen said happy retirement 

1:28:28 Caldwell said Herman B. Wells is his favorite interview 

1:29:19: blooper reel with Caldwell and other newscasters 

1:35:40: talking about what he is gonna do in retirement, wrapping up the show and getting his final thoughts 

1:39:58: ends with slideshow, a voiceover and some of his iconic broadcasts
