Debby Knox
Debby Knox is a four-time Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist whose career in television news spanned 48 years. She began in radio in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1976 before transitioning to television with roles in South Bend and Elkhart, Indiana. In 1980, she joined WISH-TV in Indianapolis as a medical and investigative reporter and noon co-anchor, eventually becoming a familiar face on the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. broadcasts.
After 33 years at WISH-TV, Knox retired in 2013 but returned to the anchor desk in 2015 to help launch CBS4-WTTV, where she remained until her second retirement in 2023.
Early Life and Education
Debby Knox was raised in Edwardsburg, Michigan, a small town where her curiosity for news emerged. She was an avid reader of her family’s two daily newspapers and was deeply impacted by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy during her childhood.
By eighth grade, she had started a current events club at her school. Knox went on to earn a communications degree from the University of Michigan, where she briefly worked for The Michigan Daily.
Reporting Highlights
Throughout her career, Knox distinguished herself with in-depth health reporting and high-profile interviews. She conducted one-on-one interviews with U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell, and former First Lady Barbara Bush. Her international reporting included an interview with Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt, and coverage of the Indiana National Guard’s peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. She also reported on global education initiatives and local medical advancements.
Awards and Honors
Knox is a four-time Emmy Award winner and received multiple nominations throughout her career. Her work has also been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists and the National American Heart Association, notably for a documentary on a heart transplant patient. She won the Indiana State Medical Journalism Award and received a CASPAR award for an investigative series on the Indiana Blood Center.
Additional honors include awards from the Associated Press, United Press International, and the Indiana Psychological Association’s Theodore Barrett Award. She was appointed a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Mike Pence in 2013 and honored by Girls Inc. in 2014.
Knox was inducted into the Associated Press Broadcast Hall of Fame and, in 2023, into the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.
Her community recognized her impact as well, with Knox named “Favorite Female TV Anchor” six times by Indianapolis Woman Magazine.
Community Engagement
Knox has been active in community and civic initiatives throughout her career.
She supported youth development programs alongside sportscaster Anthony Calhoun, raising tens of thousands of dollars. She is affiliated with several local schools and religious institutions, including Trinity Episcopal Church, Saint Richard’s Episcopal School, Cathedral High School, and Butler University.
She is also active in advocacy efforts for pancreatic cancer awareness through Pancan, a cause close to her as her sister is a survivor. In addition, she supports the League of Women Voters.
Legacy
Debby Knox's contributions to journalism have left a lasting mark on Indiana broadcasting. She was inducted into the Associated Press Broadcast Hall of Fame, the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and in her hometown of Edwardsburg, Michigan, she is honored in the local Hall of Fame.
