WTTV, Channel 4, Indiana’s second television station, got its start on Nov. 11, 1949. It moved to Channel 4 in 1954, where it remains today, previously operating on Channel 10. The station signed on in Bloomington and later moved up to Indianapolis. WTTV is currently the CBS affiliate for the Indianapolis market, sharing building space with WXIN Fox 59 and owned by the Nexstar Media Group.
WTTV's Founders
Sarkes and Mary Tarzian were the founders of WTTV. Mary encouraged her husband to start a business following his success in the engineering sector that allowed them to save upwards of $50,000.
Sarkes, an Armenian immigrant, started experimenting with the industry in 1946 when he started a radio operation called HI-FAM, which was on air until 1950. In 1949, Sarkes decided to break in to the broadcasting field and preliminary work on WTTV began.
Their son, Tom Tarzian, is the current president and CEO of Sarkes Tarzian Inc.
Early Years - 20th Century
WTTV’s first ever program was broadcast from a converted drugstore in Bloomington and titled “Tarzian TeleVision.” 96 residents bought their first television set that week to tune in to the November 11, 1949 broadcast.
When WTTV signed on the air, Bloomington was the smallest city in the United States with a television station. In this interview from 1984, Tarzian recalls the rush to get on the air and the early days of television in Bloomington.

WTTV followed the two-hour minimum broadcast requirement from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday in its early years. Additionally, the station added time to cover local sports including Bloomington high school events. Later on, WTTV found ways to extend coverage to out-of-state games including Indiana University men’s basketball.
In 1954, the station moved locations to extend its signal reach to Indianapolis and Terre Haute. The channel moved to Indianapolis in 1956, two years after its switch to Channel 4, but also kept a studio in Bloomington. The station's biggest competitors in its early days were WFBM-TV and WISH-TV.
WTTV saw many different affiliations throughout its years. Initially it was an NBC affiliate, but eventually lost affiliation and operated as an independent station from 1957 until 1998.
WTTV was the first Hoosier station to broadcast in color and did so fully in 1965. In 1979, it was the first station in Indiana to broadcast 24 hours a day. At the time there was roughly 523,825 television sets receiving WTTV programming in mostly small towns and rural areas. The station covered news, education, discussion (topics such as religion, music, sketches), drama, farm, women's and children's programs, and music and variety.

News coverage was a significant portion of WTTV's coverage, including local events, summaries at the end of each day's programming and increased coverage during election weeks. Sports also played a prominent role in play-by-play telecasting, other athletic events and commentary from sports authorities.
Tarzian sold the station to Teleco Media company in 1978 for more than $26 million. It fell under other ownership throughout the years, including Tele-Am Corporation and Warner Brothers.
Relationship with Universities
WTTV had a close relationship with both Indiana University and Purdue University. The IU Journalism and Radio Departments were given air time as early as 1949 when the station got its start. From 1956 to 1957, Indiana University supplied more than 248 hours of programming for the channel, some of which were course credit for students and some as individual educational programs.
WTTV also produced original programming at Purdue University. The farm program "RFD 4" originated in Lafayette studios as well as "Purdue Panorama" and "Stan Wood Show."

21st Century
In 2015, CBS dropped WISH-TV, its long-running Indianapolis affiliate, in favor of WTTV, then owned by Tribune Broadcasting.
Although Sarkes Tarzian Inc. no longer owns WTTV, it still owns radio and television stations and is still based in Bloomington. WTTV does however, still use the broadcasting antenna near Trafalgar, a structure over 1,000 feet tall, where Bloomington residents can still get a signal connection to WTTV.
Popular Broadcasters
During its extended time as an independent station, WTTV was left to create its own programming. Many local personalities found themselves hosting shows or playing characters for the camera.
Popular Indiana broadcasters were made famous by WTTV such as Janie Woods Hodge with her own kids show titled “Popeye and Janie” which aired from 1963 to 1986. Bob Carter played the role of "Sammy Terry," the host of horror movies on WTTV from 1962 to the late 1980's.

"Cowboy Bob" Glaze starred in Western programs in the 1970's on WTTV which was shown live, meaning he sometimes had to improvise and laugh off mistakes on air.

WTTV also aired shows that were intended more to inform than entertain. One such example was “Report From the Statehouse,” a weekly broadcast that featured a panel of Indiana journalists talking to a member of the governor’s administration.

WTTV’s programming was a testament to its success as an independent station. Despite a lack of affiliation, it could still capture 20% of its market audience. Many WTTV shows and hosts remain fondly remembered by Hoosiers today.
For more information on the early years of WTTV, watch this video interview with WTTV co-founder, Sarkes Tarzian, from Indiana University Media Collections Online.
