Red Skelton
Comedian Red Skelton was known for his rubber face and many characters. He was born in Vincennes, Indiana, in 1913. He left home at age 15 for a career that started with vaudeville and stage shows. In the 1940’s the country knew him from radio on “The Raleigh Cigarettes Program.” On television “The Red Skelton Show” had a 20-year run on NBC and CBS. He also appeared in many musical and comedy films in the 1940’s and early 50’s.
Skelton had a separate career as an accomplished artist. He died September 17, 1997, at Rancho Mirage, California.
