Phil Harris was an American bandleader, comedian, and voice actor known for his radio career, band music, and animated film roles. He was best remembered for his role as Baloo in The Jungle Book, Thomas O'Malley in The Aristocats, and as a key member of The Jack Benny Program Later, he starred with his wife in The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show

Born Wonga Philip Harris in Linton, Indiana, in 1904, Harris spent much of his early life in Nashville, Tennessee. His musical journey began as a drummer, playing in his father’s circus band before being hired by the Francis Craig Band. In the late 1920s, he co-founded the Lofner-Harris Orchestra with Carol Lofner, an orchestra that performed at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco before he launched his own Los Angeles-based band.

In 1936, Harris became musical director for The Jack Benny Program, a radio show on NBC and CBS where his quick wit and Southern charm made him a fan favorite. His character was a brash, fun-loving bandleader and became central to the show's comedy.

Harris married actress Alice Faye in 1941, and together they hosted The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show on NBC from 1948 to 1954. Harris also had a successful recording career with one of his most well-known songs being That’s What I Like About the South

Later, he voiced iconic Disney characters, including Baloo in The Jungle Book and Thomas O'Malley in The Aristocats, revitalizing his career for a younger generation. He remained active in music and entertainment into the 1980s, frequently performing in Las Vegas with bands.

A benefactor of his hometown, he established scholarships and supported local education in Linton. The local golf course is named in his honor. Harris was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to music and entertainment. He also has Two Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Harris passed away in 1995 at the age of 91.
