Long piece about the advent of news around the clock on network, cable, and satellite television news.
Traditional network news (ABC, CBS, NBC) are adding early morning and late night newscasts because of competition from CNN.
CNN went on the air in 1980, followed by the Satellite News Channel (SNC). Then Ted Turner gambled by starting CNN2 (later Headline News). He was also offering CNN2 to network affiliates so they could have programming overnight.
The networks responded by adding their own early morning and late night newscasts.
One of the programs highlighted is NBC News Overnight with Linda Ellerbee and Lloyd Dobyns.
