In Hymera, in Sullivan County, raw sewage is running into Sulphur Creek because the main lift station of the Hymera Sewage Treatment Plant broke down in December 1981. The town doesn't have the money to fix it and is even late on its loan payments for the sewage plant itself.
Former town board president Carl McAnally says the only solution is to raise the sewage tax but he knows that's a bad idea because about 65% of residents are on fixed income. He said he heard from one farmer who has sick cows, that might be because of the sewage in the creek.
