Bloomington Mayor Frank McCloskey interview with WIUS News Director Mike Conway
12/9/81
Mayor McCloskey talks about his meetings at the White House the previous week with President Ronald Reagan and members of his administration. McCloskey discusses the major cuts being made to the national budget, especially in areas that affect the cities. McCloskey does not believe trickle down economics is going to work.
:26 Q: McCloskey was at a meeting with President Ronald Reagan last week. What was the purpose of the meeting?
:30 FM. President Reagan was trying to put his best foot forward with the nation’s mayors amidst all the budget cuts. $35 Billion dollars cut for fiscal year ’82. Deficit is increasing. Some in administration want deeper cuts. David Stockman wants to eliminate block grants to cities that Bloomington has relied on for years. Sewers, roads, sidewalks, housing subsidy. Very unfortunate and very short sighted. Welfare of nation’s cities is not a big priority for Regan administration. They are sticking to their tax cut package.
3:30 People in cities will pay the price for the tax cut. Defense won’t be touched.
Q: Who was in the meeting?
4:00 Fairly large meeting. 200 people in Blue Room of White House. Mayors, league directors, county officials. Also with briefings with other leaders, including VP George Bush
4:50 HUD would fight getting rid of CDBG programs.
6:20 Administration says the trickle down economics will really turn around the economy
by 1983. Opposite of what was being reported in the newspapers. The outlook seems gloomy
7:12 Q: Do you have a chance to provide input at these type of meetings?
7:25 I don’t really know. We give our opinions but they seem to have their minds made up.
8:10 Even Republican mayors are telling President Reagan enough is enough
8:45 Reagan’s track record as California governor was one of compromise.
11:00 Q: Did you leave the meetings w/ any different perceptions?
FM: No not really. Just that they are dead set on making these cuts.
11:50 Congress may have a larger role in where budget goes
12:45 George Bush calls it “voodoo economics.” David Stockman and supply side
economics, trickle down, while the deficit goes up.
