Anne Ryder

Ever since she was a teenager, Anne Ryder's dream was to become a journalist for WTHR Channel 13 in her hometown of Indianapolis. After graduating from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, she began her career with a short tenure at WLFI-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lafayette, before being hired as a reporter at WTHI in Terre Haute. Within a few years, she quickly worked her way up to anchoring for the station's broadcasts. Ryder's lifelong dream would eventually come true when she was hired by WTHR Channel 13, where she would remain for more than 20 years.
Ryder's dedication to her work in journalism earned her state-wide and national recognition. During her time with the station, she created and produced her acclaimed series "Hope to Tell" where she travelled the world reporting stories of hope, faith, and resilience of the human spirit following personal challenges. In 1997, she became the last television reporter to be granted a sit-down interview in Calcutta with Mother Teresa prior to her death.
Ryder's legendary career in broadcasting earned her 18 regional Emmy awards and two Edward R. Murrow awards, along with three other national awards, including a Wilbur Award, a Headliner award and a Gracie, before she stepped away from full-time reporting and anchoring in 2004 following a medical emergency.
Ryder continued to do freelance reporting and national speaking under her "In An Instant" trademark for eight years, before selling the trademark to ABC News and Entertainment. Beginning in 2014, Ryder joined the Media School at Indiana University-Bloomington, teaching television journalism. Ryder was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2009.
Early Life & College Career
Anne Ryder grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating from Broad Ripple High School. She decided at the age of 15 to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. While she did not participate in the school newspaper or yearbook during her high school years, her decision to venture into the journalism industry was not a hard one to make. When she was a teenager, her father took her along on a visit to the WTHR Channel 13 News studio in Indianapolis. From the moment she stepped into the studio, she knew it was where she wanted to be.

Before attending college, Ryder was a passionate writer and admired the growing demographic of women in broadcast journalism. She remembers television news from a very young age – her mom was an avid watcher of the Today show – and female journalists were always on her radar, including Indiana-born Today show anchor Jane Pauley. Her mother died at the age of 44, when Ryder was only 14. Ryder says the loss crystalized her desire to choose a career and become a television journalist.

Ryder's father, a labor lawyer and active community volunteer in Indianapolis, supported her aspirations in journalism and recommended she cold-call several station managers around the city for their opinions on the best journalism schools in the nation. After speaking with them, Ryder made the decision to attend the acclaimed journalism program at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Ryder felt that Missouri was exactly the place she needed to be soon after starting her freshman year. There, she learned to shoot not only video, but was part of the last class of students to learn to shoot on a Bell and Howell Film camera, splice and edit the frames. The University of Missouri owns KOMU-an NBC affiliate and Anne’s work appeared on air many times as part of her advanced classwork. While in college, Anne landed a summer internship with WTHR, Channel 13 – the station where it all began when she visited with her father several years before. Ryder graduated from University of Missouri in 1981.
Early Career
After returning to Indiana after graduation, facing double-digit inflation and hiring freezes at television stations, Ryder climbed into her F-85 Oldsmobile, ( which she bought in college for $100 at a garage sale), and set up appointments with news directors, whether or not they had an opening. These included television stations in Evansville, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Terre Haute, and even stations in adjoining states. She sought feedback on her resume and video story reel.
Her first job out of college was as vacation relief reporter in Lafayette, Indiana. Three months later, she got a call from WTHI in Terre Haute, which had been impressed by her perseverance months earlier in her attempt to find a job in a bad economy. They hired her as a reporter with the caveat she would also need to learn to broadcast the weather report, since that was the only opening they had at the time.
Ryder learned she was not cut-out to be a weather woman but they quickly promoted her to a full-time reporter position, and eventually she became an anchor.

Returning Home to WTHR
Ryder, however, had her heart set on landing a job at WTHR in her hometown of Indianapolis. Ryder’s persistence in staying in touch with her mentors at WTHR in Indianapolis paid off and she was offered a position at Channel 13 as weekend producer and community affairs reporter. Ryder was producing for two of the people she had grown up admiring on TV – Tom Cochrun and Karen Dillon.
Once a full-time reporting position opened up, Bob Campbell, the news director at Channel 13, told Ryder it was hers. Later, when a weekend anchor spot opened up, she was promoted, then was promoted again shortly after to “Sunrise” anchor. In 1989, Ryder’s reporting had earned her a reputation in the city for credibility. WTHR offered her the primary anchor role at 6 and 11 pm. Her co-anchor was Tom Cochrun, one of her early mentors at the station and a journalist she grew up listening to on the radio.

"Hope to Tell"
Ryder loved working at WTHR in her hometown, but in a TV news environment where, "if it bleeds, it leads,” Anne began to question whether television news was putting too much emphasis on the bad news in the community and around the world. She felt it should be more balanced to include the strength and resilience that can be built through difficult circumstances This led to one of the most important contributions she made to WTHR, her “Hope to Tell” series that she pitched to station managers in 1993.

“Hope to Tell” was created with the intention of looking through the hardships of life, and the faith and friends which endured. “Hope to Tell” allowed Ryder and WTHR photojournalists to travel the world, places including Bosnia, Belfast, Albania, Rome, and Calcutta. Although Ryder was Channel 13’s primary anchor, reporting remained her true passion and the “Hope to Tell” series is what gave her the most fulfillment.

Interviewing Mother Teresa
Ryder sought to tell local stories as well as national and international stories. This led to “Hope to Tell’s” greatest “get” --a story with Mother Teresa, the Calcutta nun and founder of Missionaries of Charity, a woman who gave very few interviews. Ryder wrote a letter to Mother Teresa explaining “Hope to Tell,” and asking for an interview. Mother Teresa wrote back, declining the interview but inviting Ryder to come to Calcutta to “share in our works of love.” Despite the interview rejection, WTHR took a gamble and sent Ryder and her team of photographers, Steve Starnes and Bill Reagan from WTHR’s sister station in Columbus, Ohio, to India to chase the story.
But life threw a lovely curveball. Shortly before the trip, Ryder discovered that after years of trying to conceive, she was pregnant. She sought the advice of multiple doctors about the safety of making the trip, but made the decision not to tell the station. She did, however, tell Starnes and Reagan once the plane had already taken off.
In order to get a better understanding for Mother Teresa's mission, Ryder volunteered herself as a worker at a few of the Mission of Charities' homes in Calcutta. Ryder says her decision to “not be a pushy journalist, for once” yielded a positive response. Ryder was granted permission to shoot video in every one of Mother Teresa’s five homes for the poor and destitute in Calcutta, and on her final day in India, Mother Teresa granted her a rare one-on-one interview—the last one she gave in Calcutta prior to her death the following year.

Additional work with WTHR
Ryder was an influential journalist in Indianapolis, but towards the end of her time with Channel 13, she unexpectedly became known as a motivational public speaker as well.
After a medical emergency in 2002, a five-month pregnant Anne Ryder lost the child she was carrying in a uterine rupture that went undiagnosed for hours. Despite losing her baby and nearly, her life, Ryder was inspired by the care of her nursing staff. She felt compelled to share the story of her extraordinary care as the keynote speaker at a nursing convention in Indianapolis. Her message led to an invitation to speak for nurses across the country for the next 5 years, relaying the story of the power of compassion, the message of Mother Teresa and the paradox of staying vulnerable while summoning strength—“Hope to Tell” in a different and much more personal form.
Retirement from Broadcasting
In 2002, Anne Ryder decided to reduce her anchoring schedule to allot more time for her husband and daughter. Later in November of 2003, Ryder decided to step down completely from her position as anchor. Her fourteen year tenure as Channel 13’s main anchor would come to its end in the Spring of 2004. She decided instead to continue working freelance with Channel 13, saying, “I have always been a believer in following my heart….and my heart tells me it’s time to focus on my passions; my family, my writing and telling stories for television.”
Anne Ryder has earned 18 regional Emmy Awards, five national awards including two Edward R. Murrow Awards, and honorary doctorates from three universities. In 2009, Ryder was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame.

Teaching Career at The Media School
Ryder moved into the classroom for the next phase of her career. She began teaching television news at Indiana University in 2014, working her way from an adjunct teacher of broadcast journalism to a Senior Lecturer at the Media School, overseeing three of the undergraduate broadcast news skills courses as well as the curriculum-based newscast. The student newscast, IU NewsNet, has won multiple awards and her former students are working in newsrooms all across the country. In her classes, Ryder uses her platform to teach her students the traits of being an effective journalist.

She is still known for her community involvement and has been designated a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest citizen award in the state of Indiana.
Anne Ryder donated her broadcast archive to the IBHA.
