Jim Phillippe

James Phillippe was chairman of Butler University’s department of radio and television, as well as the manager of the student-led WAJC Radio. Phillippe was also a track announcer for the Indianapolis 500 Race for 54 years, where he provided driver interviews and color commentary.

Phillippe’s first broadcasting work was at WSAZ, a station in Charleston, West Virginia. After his work there, he transitioned to working at Butler University in Indianapolis.

From 1946 to 1964, Phillippe served as chairman of Butler’s drama department. He also worked part-time at radio station WIRE and WFBM-TV during this time frame.

In 1950, Phillippe began working as a track announcer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He narrated pre-race ceremonies, helped deliver news and aided in the development of driver interviews immediately after their qualification runs. In May 2003, Phillippe was awarded the Unsung Hero Award for his service to the Speedway. The award was presented to Phillippe by Andy Granatelli.

In 1965, he became the chairman of Butler’s department of radio and television and manager of student-led WAJC Radio, a position he held until 1986. Many graduates of the Butler program led by Phillippe have gone on to successful broadcast careers.

In 1985, Phillippe was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame. Not only was he inducted, but he also served as a president of the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers.

The James R. "Jim" Phillippe Service to CCOM Award at Butler University is named after him, recognizing his contributions to the College of Communication.

Phillippe passed away on December 15, 2003, at 84 years old after a long illness. Phillippe is remembered from his impact at Butler University and his decades of service at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
