Ken Owen
Ken Owen began his media career at DePauw University, a small private liberal arts college of Greencastle, Indiana. His mother was once a student at DePauw University and Owen came to visit the campus for the 1977 Monon Bell Game, that was being broadcasted by ABC, which inspired his enrollment at the school.
Studying Communication Arts and Sciences, Ken Owen played right field for Depauw’s baseball team one semester and became involved with the student radio station as a freshman – WGRE. As a senior, Ken Owen interned at WIRE in Indianapolis where he was offered a full time job. Student and station manager at WGRE by day, Owen was reporting and anchoring for WIRE by night until he graduated in May of 1982.

After WIRE, Ken Owen moved onto the Indianapolis start-up station WIBC where he anchored his first television newscast in 1984. After WIBC didn’t work out, Ken Owen ended up at WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana where served as the Primary News Anchor for three years.

After Fort Wayne, Ken Owen made his way to Asheville, North Carolina to work as WLOS-TV’s Primary News Anchor for just under two years before he made it back to the Hoosier State.

Ken Owen with WLOS-TV traveled to the (then) Soviet Union in June of 1988 to report and produce an award-winning documentary on Billy Graham. The crew were the only electronic journalists from the U.S. to cover events held to mark the millennium of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Owen began as News Anchor and Reporter for the CBS Affiliate WISH-TV of Indianapolis in 1989. During his time there he co-anchored the number one in the market 5:30 PM news segment; served as general assignment, trends, and technology reporter; and investigated, produced, prepared, and edited a daily segment for seven years. Along with writing and editing many others’ stories, he hosted a weekly half hour public affairs program titled “Top Story.”
While at Indianapolis' WISH-TV, Ken Owen covered the Oklahoma City Bombing.
Nine years were spent at WISH-TV before Ken Owen moved to the ABC Affiliate WRTV (Channel 6) of Indianapolis. Owen served as the station’s secondary anchor, informing the public of national, regional, and local events. He selected, researched, and analyzed “happenings” to write daily stories with supporting film footage.
Ken Owen was on air with Channel 6 for two years until, in 2001, he returned to his alma mater to serve as the Executive Director of Media Relations. Hesitant at first, Owen felt like he still wanted to work in television broadcasting, but he promised President Bob Bottoms two years of employment.
Those two years turned into eighteen years with DePauw University.
As the Executive Director of Media Relations, Ken Owen provided leadership to the university’s external communication strategies, held strong relationships with the press, kept up the university’s reputation, and educated leaders on proper communication. He also hosted the Ubben Lecture Series which brought individuals such as Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall, Spike Lee and Mikhail Gorbachev to the Greencastle campus. Owen served as strategic liaison for university televised events and a face of DePauw at public events.
In 2017 Ken Owen became the Special Advisor for DePauw University’s President. He worked on executive and administrative communication for the institution, and served as a liaison between the president and the media for sensitive issues. Ken Owen also commonly spoke on the university’s behalf.
After leaving DePauw University in 2019, Ken Owen moved onto consulting with KO Communications and Strategies where he works as the principal. With KO Communications and Strategies, Owen works with businesses, colleges, and nonprofits about communication and branding. He also coaches, shares his expertise, and serves as a moderator for public events.
Throughout Ken Owen’s career, he was the winner of Associated Press and United Press International journalism awards and has conducted interviews with notable individuals such as, but not limited to, George H.W. Bush, Paul McCartney, and John Major.
Owen has served as the Vice President and board member of Indiana Broadcast Pioneers, Annapolis Group’s Communications Committee co-chair, Indianapolis Public Relations Society board member and event emcee, WFYI’s Media and Marketing Committee member, and Big Brothers of Greater Indianapolis board member.
