Helen Huber
Helen Huber played a significant role in the Indiana broadcasting industry. She served as the executive secretary of the Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA) for 25 years, helping to shape and support the organization’s early development. In recognition of her contributions, she was inducted as a charter member along with 16 other individuals into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1981
Huber’s career in broadcasting began at WIRE, a radio station in Indianapolis. She entered the male-dominated field and quickly became an essential part of the station’s operations. At WIRE, she worked closely with management and contributed to the station’s growth. She later took on leadership roles with the IBA, where she managed business affairs and helped strengthen Indiana’s broadcasting industry.
WIRE-AM 1430 was a prominent Indianapolis radio station, known for its country music programming and strong audience engagement. Originally launched in 1924 under different call letters, WBBZ and WKBF call- letters, the station became WIRE in 1935 and was a part of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) network. WIRE gained popularity for its music, sports broadcasting, and community service efforts. The station thrived in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, achieving high ratings and solidifying its place in Indianapolis radio history.
In addition to her work in broadcasting, Huber served as the executive secretary of SMC Pneumatics Inc. before retiring in 1984. Her contributions to the industry earned her widespread respect, and her Hall of Fame induction cemented her legacy.
Helen Huber passed away in 1987 at Methodist Hospital. Her dedication to the WIRE and her impact on Indiana’s radio industry remain an important part of broadcast history.
