Fred Heckman was a respected journalist and news director at WIBC-AM in Indianapolis, where he worked for 32 years. He became one of the city’s most trusted voices, known for his “My Town Indy” radio essays and commitment to journalistic integrity. In 1977, he played a pivotal role in negotiating the safe release of a hostage during the Tony Kiritsis standoff, gaining national attention for his efforts.

Born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, in 1923, Heckman’s early years were marked by frequent relocations before his family settled in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Arizona, George Washington University and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Indianapolis. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and the Naval Reserve during the Korean War, specializing in cryptography. His military service later earned him a lifetime designation as Civilian Aide Emeritus to the Secretary of the Army.

Heckman began his radio career working at radio stations in Delaware, South Carolina, Georgia, and the District of Columbia before joining WIBC-AM in 1957. As news director, he upheld high journalistic standards, advocating for diverse reporting and allowing reporters time to pursue investigative stories. His leadership helped WIBC become one of Indianapolis’ top-rated stations.

In 1977, the Kiritsis hostage crisis cemented Heckman’s legacy. When Tony Kiritsis took his mortgage broker hostage and demanded to tell his side of the story, he trusted Heckman as his sole communicator. Heckman’s calm approach and strategic broadcasts helped de-escalate tensions and secure the hostage’s release.

Heckman left WIBC in 1993 due to disagreements over management’s shift toward “happy news.” He later returned as news director emeritus before retiring in 2000.

Heckman was inducted into multiple journalism halls of fame, including the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame. He remained a key figure in Indiana broadcasting until his death in 2001.
