Jay Gould

Jay Gould was a unique blend of radio philosopher, essayist, songwriter, and author. He had background of teacher and school superintendent in Michigan when he arrived at WOWO, Fort Wayne, in 1938 as director of children’s programming. He created “Little Doc Hickory” and “The Old Songsmith.” After a brief stint at WLS, Chicago, he returned to WOWO in 1941 as farm service director and prominence with the long-running “Little Red Barn” morning show and the mid-day “Dinner on the Farm” program. Gould was responsible for creating a number of charity projects launched by WOWO, and the start of school closing announcements. He left the station in 1983 and died the following year at age 82.
