Bill Crawford
Bill Crawford was a pioneering meteorologist and broadcaster who became the first weathercaster at WFBM-TV (now WRTV) in Indianapolis. With a background as a professional meteorologist and pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he transitioned to television, where his engaging style and signature "Hi" greeting made him a beloved figure in Indianapolis broadcasting.
Born on June 26, 1917, in Elkhart, Indiana, Crawford grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, and graduated from Beloit College. He completed meteorological training at the University of Chicago before serving as a weather officer in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II.
His military career began in 1940 when he joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Crawford rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before resigning from the military in 1949.
After leaving the military, he pursued dental studies at Indiana University while simultaneously beginning his career in broadcasting.
Nervously auditioning for a weather announcer position at WFBM-TV, Crawford quickly became a standout personality, providing both early and late evening weathercasts.
Crawford’s innovative approach to weather reporting included integrating his meteorological expertise with an approachable on-air presence. His ratings soared, leading the station to feature him prominently at the start of newscasts.
Crawford opened his dental practice in Indianapolis in 1953 but continued broadcasting weather reports for another 11 years due to popular demand. His ability to combine technical meteorological expertise with an approachable style made him a household name.
Even after being diagnosed with cancer in 1964, Crawford remained dedicated to his audience by writing a daily weather column until his death on October 3, 1968.
Crawford’s contributions to broadcasting and meteorology left an enduring legacy in Indianapolis television history and was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame in recognition of his impact.
