Kenneth Coe
Kenneth S. Coe was a pioneering figure in Indiana broadcasting, with a career spanning nearly six decades. He was best known as the longtime host of the popular call-in program "Sound Off" on WLOI/WCOE in La Porte, Indiana, and for his induction into the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2000.
Coe's journey in radio began after studying telecommunications at Indiana University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy on the U.S. Hank DD702 before fully committing to his broadcasting career in La Porte, Indiana.
In 1977, Coe took over operations of WLOI AM and FM in La Porte, rebranding the FM station as 96.7 WCOE with a country music format.
Following his father's death in 1982, he became President of Lake County Broadcasting Company, expanding his influence by owning WWCA in Gary and WJOR in South Haven, Michigan.
Coe's flagship program, "Sound Off," which he hosted for 30 years, became a cornerstone of community engagement in La Porte. His distinctive voice and the show's memorable jingle left an indelible mark on generations of listeners.
Beyond his on-air presence, Coe was a respected industry leader. He served on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Broadcasters Association for 18 years, including a term as State President from 1981-82. He also served as President of the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers for two years (1983-84) and co-founded the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Foundation, Inc.
Coe's influence extended to the national level, where he served two 2-year terms on the National Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors representing Indiana. He was a frequent speaker at state and national conventions and served on various committees for the IBA, NAB, and Radio Advertising Bureau.
Throughout his 43-year broadcasting career, Coe ensured that his stations provided solid local news coverage, with WCOE becoming known as the "Indiana Sports Leader" for its extensive sports reporting.
Coe passed away on December 29, 2016, leaving behind a legacy of broadcasting excellence and community service. He is remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his love of family, friends, radio, and the community he served so passionately.
