(full interview was apparently on five separate tapes. We haven’t found Tape 1.)

Logsheet, 12/25

***Bad video!!! Seems to be a tracking issue … for the entire Yoakam interview and then video is fine on what must have been on the tape first,,

00:50 News Director of radio/tv station in Cedar Rapids, IA..very early on the air
-expert if you were on the air 6 weeks
01:22 we tried the 10 oclock news in a variety of ways… used the kitchen set for awhile
01:45 We were pioneers and had interesting people working there. Tom Pettit, later of NBC
Life long friend, 4-5 others … news at 6p and 10pm
-had a lot of fun, didn’t know what TV news should be
02:20 a friend, mentor at Univ. of Iowa had heard about the IU opening
Asked if I was interested.. and got in touch with John Stempel,Chair of IU Journalism
Dept.
02:50 I liked what I saw, I wanted to teach, wanted to involve students
Turned out to be just great.
03:45 -I felt like being on a camera was a lonely experience, on your own
-I enjoyed on air work… it’s a strange experience, doing the news
Q…how do you prepare for live shots?
04:40 Live shots… don’t forget 5 Ws and H (who, what, when, where, why & how)
-can be in any order
-being live…. I’ve never done a live shot w/ fire behind me, people say it’s terrifying
06:10 -Jane Pauley prepared better than anyone. She had a tough H.S. speech coach that really made her think on her feet
-she grew up talking to lots of people, be prepared

08:30 interview is over. Rest of tape is head shot of Yoakam as they listen to an audio
recording of former students talking about his impact on their careers. Can’t really
hear the audio.
15:30 the only person to say “We’re going to the Rose Bowl!” must be talking about 1967
IU football team…Bill Cameron?
17:00 he’s listening to Mike Conway talk about what he learned in Yoakam’s class
24:00 end of tape is Yoakam talking about email from Mike Conway on the union contracts
at his station in Erie
24:30 End of Tape
